Babar Gull (born 1981) is a visual artist currently based in Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his BFA in Hunerkada College of Visual & Performing Arts, Lahore in 2005. Babar then went on to pursue and complete an MA Visual Arts (Hons.) at the National College of Arts, Lahore in 2016.
Babar is inspired by the use of basic forms and shapes as a starting point in his artistic process, teetering between the line and the grid. He focuses on building up his work, layer by layer, through a soft rendering of paint on Wasli paper. Recently, Babar’s practice has taken a new turn and he is now working on a more minimalist aesthetic, taking inspiration from the precision and attention to detail found in Japanese art and origami. He does not aim to replicate a particular image in his work, but rather to capture its essence and give an impression of the subject. Often, Babar re-examines his references, studying them from different angles which allows him to achieve a closer rendition of what he wants them to appear as in his mind's eye. He maintains his studio practice alongside his career in teaching, which he does on a part-time basis. Babar has also been an integral part of the Khaas Gallery team since 2009 where he has been working as a curator for the gallery in Islamabad, for many years and is now a remote collaborator. He continues to exhibit his artwork locally and internationally.
His artwork is housed within the permanent collection of the Ambiance Boutique Art Hotels.
