Hamid Ali Hanbhi (born 1989) is a multidisciplinary visual artist currently based in Lahore, Pakistan. He completed his BFA in Visual Arts from the National College of Arts, Lahore in 2016 and received a distinction for his efforts.
Hamid began his career by painting cinema boards, billboards, and truck art at Ideal Arts, Jacobabad. He works in various mediums including; drawing, painting, sculpture, videos and large-scale installations. Hamid’s body of work includes a re-creation of cinematic visuals. Using his power of imagination, he extracts new meanings out of existing frames to prolong the brief moments in them. The visual arc of this series ranges from romantic scenes, war and political imagery to landscapes from fantasy worlds. The juxtaposition of multiple stills from multiple films is the core of Hamids’s work. Through his pieces, he aims to create a dialogue between contrasting images while reliving those distant locations and times through the very act of painting. Hamid has exhibited his pieces extensively in local art institutions most notably at, Imago Mundi at Venice Biennale, Venice in 2016; Out of Sight and Before the End of Time at Canvas Gallery, Karachi in 2020 and 2022 respectively; Taseer Art Gallery, Lahore; Dar Amad, NIC, Reclaim, If You Have Tears and Virtual Reality at O Art Space, Lahore in 2022 and 2021; Lahore Biennale, Lahore in 2018; Karachi Biennale, Karachi in 2017; Uncurated at Full Circle Gallery, Karachi in 2022. His work has also been published in the Imago Mundi Publication. Hamid has also conducted workshops for the Lahore Biennale. He is currently a teacher at R.M Naeem Studio, Lahore.
His artwork is housed within the permanent collection of the Ambiance Boutique Art Hotels.
